C. L. Brumback Primary Care Clinics' Dental Clinics promote good oral health for children
February is National Children’s Dental Health month. In recognition of its 36th year celebration, the C. L. Brumback Primary Care Dental Clinics are working to promote the benefits of good oral health for children and their families.
Dr. Arwa AlwehaibRecently, a pilot initiative was launched in Delray Beach featuring Dr. Arwa Alwehaib, who will visit area schools and partner with a HeadStart center to provide oral health education.
Dr. Alwehaib explained that, “Many parents are unaware of the importance of bringing their child to the dentist prior to any dental issues. Preventive care is key in preventing tooth decay.”
A 2013 survey of Florida third graders found that over 20 percent had untreated dental caries (commonly referred to as “cavities”). This number was even higher among the poor as well as racial and ethnic minorities.
While the risk and impact of poor dental health is greater for these groups, economically disadvantaged children are the least likely to receive necessary dental treatment. The unintentional neglect results in missed schools days and painful ER visits.
In 2014, more than $13 million was spent on emergency room dental visits for children ages 0-20.
As part of the Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s mission, the C. L. Brumback Dental Clinics are addressing the disparity and increasing access to care for children.
The dental clinics are dedicating every Saturday on a rotating basis for pediatric dental appointments. As always, children can also be seen Monday through Friday at any of our four locations.
