A primary mission of the Health Care District of Palm Beach County is to provide health coverage to uninsured residents. In the past year, we have provided residents more than 2-million health care services from doctors, hospitals and other health care providers.

Health care coverage is one of the most important issues facing our nation. Nearly 47 million Americans, or 16 percent of the U.S. population, were without health insurance in 2005, according to the latest government data available. The number of uninsured rose 2.2 million between 2005 and 2006, and the large majority of the uninsured (80 percent) are native or naturalized citizens.

To better serve our community, in 1993, the District launched the Coordinated Care Program for qualified residents who are not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid, but lack private health insurance.

Since then, the Health Care District has established several other health coverage programs, including the Personal Health Plan, a Medicaid HMO, the Maternity Care Program, which provides prenatal and postnatal care to uninsured expectant mothers, and Vita Health, an affordable health coverage option for working individuals and families.

Sharon Grant’s employer did not offer health care coverage, and she could not afford the premiums on her own. The single mother of four was uninsured and worried about missing check-ups and receiving preventative health care – until she discovered the Vita Health program. The District pays for two-thirds of the cost keeping premiums as low as $30 a month. Vita Health fits Sharon Grant's budget. Now she sees a doctor regularly to build a healthy lifestyle.
